Made in Ohio

Long known for its Buckeye candy, die-hard sporting fans and some delicious killer barbecue, Ohio also continues to gain notice as an area to be for manufacturing know-how and expertise. This fact was recently verified in the 2015 Manufacturing and Logistics Report prepared by the Center for Business and Economic Research at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. Ohio was among 16 states recognized for its above average (grades A and B) manufacturing prowess and efficiency as measured by manufacturing total income, wages paid and share of manufacturing employment per person.

Ohio’s Report Card

(A) Global Reach – In this area, Ohio outshines the competition in imports and exports and distribution of consumer goods

(A) Logistics – Processing, storage and distribution of manufactured goods happens quickly in the Buckeye state.

(B) Manufacturing – Ohio welcomes manufacturing innovation such as the construction of new additive manufacturing centers in the state that combine local industry and non-profit and university partners.

(C-) Human Capital – The state is working to introduce manufacturing to a new generation of students and their parents through dedicated training and educational opportunities at the high school, vocational and university levels.

(C) Worker Benefit Costs – Evolving non-wage labor costs such as health care insurance, workers’ compensation, retirement pensions and other worker benefits keep the state’s manufacturers on its collective toes.

(C) Tax Climate – At this time, the state’s 2015 outlook of cumulative costs (state and local taxes, business taxes, insurance, property tax, and employment) is comparable to surrounding states.

(C) Expected Fiscal Liability Gap – This grade remains similar to the expected gap of the last two years for unfunded liabilities related to bonds and pensions.

(C-) Sector Diversification – Further diversification within the industry can decrease the possibility of volatility for employment and incomes over a business cycle.

Earning the Grade

Overall, the outlook for manufacturing in the state remains strong. At Walsh we believe much of this industry-related consistency can be attributed to a manufacturer’s staff of well-trained and qualified workers.
